Darksiders III – Furiously Frustrating or Sinfully Satisfying? — Dorkadia

After years of waiting and wondering if we’d ever see another Darksiders game following the bankruptcy of THQ back in 2012, Darksiders III has arrived. With an arsenal of weapons at her command and a single-minded determination, Fury heads to Earth on a mission to defeat the Seven Deadly Sins. It’s a challenging, sometimes frustrating,…

Mass violence and mental illness

Yesterday I shared an article on social media and commented on the absurdity of calls by our political leadership to “…make sure people with mental illness do not get guns.” I think the conversation got a little off track from what I was trying to say. My point was more that despite what politicians may be saying, they do not care about mental health or public safety.

tl;dr— talk of mental illness is a bullshit, feel-good way of diverting from the topic of gun control. It’s an emotional appeal with the appearance of taking a stance in a day and age when the public is fed up with thoughts and prayers. Continue reading

Writing all of the things!

Of all of the things that should be really easy for me at this point, you’d think it would be writing regularly. It turns out that I do have things to say that aren’t necessarily suitable for publication over on Dorkadia. That’s what this personal blog is for, right? And yet, no posts since what… May of last year? Seriously? Yep, and I think that’s a problem.

Social media has been a heck of a hurdle for me and I’ve been working on that one recently. Most of the time I don’t feel like what I have to say would be of interest to anyone. I suppose that’s par for the course when you’re an introvert. I mean, why would anyone care to read a few hundred words about my feelings on a beer or my socially liberal political views or my excitement over enjoying football (American and real)? Maybe nobody will, but I think it’s important that I write about it anyway.

So the new plan: write something, even if it’s just a short blurb, at least once a week on here. Gaming stuff is still going to be over on Dorkadia. It does keep me really busy what with gaming, opinions, podcasts, editing, and keeping in touch with various PR groups to wrangle review copies. That’s no excuse to limit my creative output to heavily biased game reviews.

Parting note for now: Seattle is an amazing city. This last week has been outstanding with the massive community support for the Seahawks. There have been 12th Man flags everywhere, people wearing Seahawks apparel like crazy, and now that they’ve won there’s going to be a parade. Feels great to see a city rally behind something even if it is as contrived as sportsball.

Drinking all the beer.

It’s summer! Even here in the Pacific Northwest, the sun is out and the temperatures are rising. That can mean only one thing, or maybe multiple things, but it does coincide with the 2012 Seattle International Beerfest. SIB is one of my personal favorite annual events in Seattle. There is usually an eclectic mix of people enjoying a common love of liquid goodness.

Starting SIB off with The Stoic from Deschutes brewery in Oregon.

This year the festival features a mouthwatering array of brews from all over the world including incredibly rare offerings such as the Samuel Adams Utopias. But beyond the beer, there are
numerous amazing local food vendors on hand to provide cheeses, nuts, tortas, hot dogs, and more. My personal recommendation for a good snack is the cured meat and cheese pairings on a stick from Mt. Townsend Creamery.

It’s no secret that I am a fan of the darker beers, and there are far too many porters and stouts for me to try over the course of the weekend. If you can only make one day of the festival and need to taste with the 10 tickets you get with entry, allow me to suggest the Mad Viking Cognac IRS, the Two Beers Ascension, the Zhiguli Grande 12%, the Double Mountain Ferocious Five, and the Wingman P-51 Continue reading
